The graffiti are not a modern phenomenon but are as old as mankind, maintaining a history from 3,000 years ago, almost as long as the writing itself.

The first sample of graffiti was written in Greek and dated from the 8th century BC.., was found in a tomb at Pithicoussae in Italy and is known as "Nestor's cup." The translation of this graffiti meant “Once, Nestor had a similar container, whoever drinks from it will be conquered by Aphrodite and her passion”. Nestor was the owner of the tomb and was only 15 years old and had apparently participated in extremely erotic scenarios.

Angelos Chaniotis, Professor of Ancient History at the Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, defines the old graffiti as "traces of voices and feelings”. The graffiti content It is largely sexual, insinuations and offensive comments due to the fact that its authors were expressing their sexual preferences or simply insulting an adversary.

The teacher has studied more than 4,000 graffiti. In Aphrodisias, located in present-day Turkey, the professor found thousands of painted or engraved on marble with content of all kinds, including religious symbols, names, offensive comments and obscene images, created in large part to offend your opponents in games or matches. "Graffiti is often related to opposition and competition”Says Chaniotis. Among the graffiti found in Athens, for example, you can read “Tittas the champion is a fag"Or"Syndromachus, has a deep anus”.

Most graffiti They were written with charcoal and thanks to this they have survived to this day, surviving under very harsh circumstances. In Pompeii they were buried by the ashes of the volcano but they are well preserved and can be divided into two categories: brothel advertisements and politics advertisements, made before the elections that indicated who they should vote for (something that has remained in keeping with our times).

Professor Chaniotis made a presentation in Thessaloniki under the name “Graffiti in the old city: images and voices of everyday life”, Since he was invited by the Dukakis Center for public and humanitarian service.

I was born in Madrid on August 27, 1988 and since then I started a work of which there is no example. Fascinated by both numbers and letters and a lover of the unknown, that is why I am a future graduate in Economics and Journalism, interested in understanding life and the forces that have shaped it. Everything is easier, more useful and more exciting if, with a look at our past, we can improve our future and for that… History.
